Entry #14
So, it was my birthday a week ago, and as a present, my parents bought me tickets to go see Blue Man Group in concert. Originally, I had planned on taking a female because...well boobs > no boobs. Unfortunately, she bailed on me, so I asked good old JoS if he wanted to go. Luckily, he said yes and I did not have to scalp the ticket/sit by myself.
We got to the arena where the concert was just as the opening act came on. It was this artist (who's name escapes me right now) who would paint to music. For instance, a Rolling Stones song was playing, and he painted a portrait of Mick Jagger while dancing and stuff. It was pretty impressive to watch. He ended up doing three different portraits; Mick Jagger, Bono and Jimi Hendrix. When he was doing the portrait of Hendrix, he was painting something that didn't look like anything........until he turned it upside down. Then, BOOM! Jimi Hendrix. Very, very cool. Apparently, the paintings were for sale too. I don't even want to know how much those were going for.
So, that guy finishes and the stage starts getting cleared and set up for the Blue Man Group. For those of you who only know them from the old Pentium III commercials, here's what they're like in concert. After waiting a while, the lights go down the Blue Man Group takes the stage. Surprisingly, people banging on plastic pipes sounds really good. I actually didn't know they had a full band behind them until tonight, too.
Their entire premise/theme for the concert was becoming a "rock megastar", which involved them learning how to do it through an instructional DVD. The DVD came with various "rock concert movements" (which explains Floppy the Clown from the Youtube link). All while doing this, they provided a lot of fan interaction, running into the crowd and getting people on stage. Throughout the entire set, they would do really awesome things with the lightning and their costuming that really made me sit back and say "wow". I think the best example would be having their bodies outlined with LED strips and having everything go black, so all you see is an outline. Seriously, words can't do that justice. It was that cool. They ended up finishing off their set by doing a cover of The Who's "Baba O'Reilly" (I'll be seeing them in October, stay tuned for that report) which again.....was extremely cool. I think that's really the best way to describe the entire concert experience...cool.
On the way out, we ran into a group of blue men. We got our picture taken with them. They weren't the Blue Man Group...but close enough.
(apologies for the blurry picture, JoS' camera sucks)
